Policies & Legal Information

A legal disclaimer

Last updated: 16 May 2026

This privacy policy explains how I collect, use and protect your personal data when you visit Independence Paradox (independenceparadox.com). I take your privacy seriously and handle your data in line with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Who I am

Independence Paradox is a personal blog run by an individual based in the United Kingdom. For the purposes of UK GDPR, I am the "data controller" — the person responsible for deciding how your personal data is used. You can contact me via the contact form on the website.

What data I collect

I only collect the data I actually need, in the following situations:

  • Contact form submissions — when you send me a message, I collect your name, email address, and the content of your message.

  • Newsletter subscriptions — if you sign up for the newsletter, I collect your email address and (optionally) your name.

  • Blog comments — if you leave a comment, I collect your name, email address (not displayed publicly), the comment content, and your IP address (logged by Wix for spam prevention).

  • Website analytics — Wix automatically collects basic analytics data including IP address, browser type, device type, pages visited, time on site, and referring website. This data is used in aggregated form only.

I do not knowingly collect personal data from children under the age of 13.

Why I collect it (lawful basis)

Under UK GDPR I must have a lawful basis for processing your data. My bases are:

  • Consent — for newsletter signups and (where applicable) non-essential cookies. You can withdraw consent at any time.

  • Legitimate interest — for responding to messages you send me, moderating comments, and understanding how visitors use the site so I can improve it.

How long I keep your data

  • Contact form messages: up to 2 years, then deleted

  • Newsletter subscribers: until you unsubscribe, then deleted within 30 days

  • Comments: kept as long as the related post is published

  • Analytics: aggregated and retained per Wix's standard retention periods

Who I share your data with

I do not sell your data. Ever. I share it only with the service providers that help me run the site:

  • Wix.com Ltd — website hosting, analytics, contact forms, comments. Wix acts as a data processor on my behalf.

  • Email/newsletter provider — when I set up a newsletter, the provider (likely a Wix-integrated tool or Mailchimp/Substack) will process subscriber emails on my behalf. I will update this policy when the provider is confirmed.

Some of these providers (including Wix) may store or process data outside the UK, including in the United States and Israel. Where this happens, transfers are protected by appropriate safeguards under UK GDPR (such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or equivalent contractual clauses).

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data I hold about you

  • Ask me to correct inaccurate data

  • Ask me to delete your data ("right to be forgotten")

  • Restrict or object to how I use your data

  • Receive your data in a portable format

  • Withdraw consent at any time (where consent is the basis)

  • Complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) — ico.org.uk

To exercise any of these rights, contact me via the contact form. I will respond within one month.

2. COOKIE POLICY

Last updated: 16 May 2026

This site uses cookies — small text files stored on your device — to help the site function, understand how it's used, and improve your experience.

Types of cookies used

  • Strictly necessary cookies — required for the site to function (e.g. security, page navigation, form submission). These cannot be switched off.

  • Functional cookies — remember your preferences, such as language or display settings.

  • Analytics cookies — set by Wix to understand which pages are popular and how visitors move through the site. Data is aggregated and anonymised.

  • Third-party cookies — embedded content from external sources (for example, video players or social media widgets) may set their own cookies. I do not control these.

Managing cookies

When you first visit the site, you will see a cookie banner allowing you to accept or reject non-essential cookies. You can change your choice at any time via the cookie settings link in the site footer.

You can also block or delete cookies directly in your browser settings. Note that disabling some cookies may affect how the site works.

For more information about cookies generally, see ico.org.uk/your-data-matters/online/cookies.

3. LEGAL DISCLAIMER

Last updated: 16 May 2026

Please read this disclaimer carefully before using The Independence Paradox.

Personal opinions only

All content on this blog reflects my own personal views, opinions, experiences, and interpretations. It does not represent the views of any employer, organisation, or third party. Content may change, be updated, or be removed without notice.

Not professional advice

The content on this blog is provided for general information, education, and entertainment purposes only. It is not professional advice of any kind.

Specifically:

  • Not medical or mental health advice. Nothing on this blog is intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any physical or mental health condition. Posts about wellness, mental health, lifestyle, or personal development reflect my own experience and reading, not clinical guidance. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional, GP, or registered therapist before acting on any health-related information. If you are in crisis, contact emergency services or a recognised support line such as the Samaritans (116 123 in the UK).

  • Not legal, financial, or other regulated advice. I am not a solicitor, financial advisor, doctor, therapist, or other regulated professional. Where I share research, book references or commentary on these topics, it is general information only.

You are responsible for your own decisions. I am not liable for any action you take, or fail to take, based on content from this blog.

Accuracy of information

I try to ensure information is accurate at the time of publishing, but I make no warranty about its completeness, accuracy, reliability, or suitability. Books, research and ideas referenced may be summarised, paraphrased or interpreted from my own perspective.

Affiliate links and monetisation

In future, this blog may include affiliate links — for example, links to books on Amazon, Bookshop.org or similar retailers. If you click an affiliate link and make a purchase, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Affiliate links will be clearly disclosed in any post containing them, in line with UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) guidance.

I only link to books or resources I have personally read, used, or believe are worth sharing. Commission does not influence my opinion.

External links

This blog links to external websites I do not control. I am not responsible for the content, accuracy, privacy practices or accessibility of those sites. Linking does not imply endorsement.

Copyright

All original content on Independence Paradox — including posts, written commentary, and images created by me — is © Independence Paradox and the author, and may not be reproduced without permission, except for brief quotations with attribution and a link back to the original post.

Where I use book covers, quotes, or excerpts from third-party works, this is done under "fair dealing" provisions of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 for the purposes of criticism, review, and quotation.

4. Terms of Use

By using the Independence Paradox you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

4.1 About the site

the Independence Paradox is a personal blog run by an individual based in the United Kingdom. It is not a business and does not provide professional services.

4.2 Acceptable use

You agree to use this site only for lawful purposes. You must not:

  • Use the site in any way that breaks UK law

  • Post or transmit any unlawful, defamatory, abusive, harassing, obscene or threatening content

  • Attempt to gain unauthorised access to the site or its underlying systems

  • Use automated tools to scrape, harvest or copy content without permission

  • Use the site in a way that damages or impairs its availability for others

4.3 Intellectual property

All original content I create — including posts, written commentary, journaling and my own photography — is my intellectual property and is protected by copyright.

Some images on the site are stock images provided through the Wix platform and used under the licence Wix grants its users. These images remain the property of their respective owners and are not my intellectual property. Where an image is my own photography, it is mine. Where I photograph identifiable people, I do so with their consent.

You may:

  • Read, share and link to posts

  • Quote short excerpts with clear attribution and a link back to the original

You may not:

  • Republish full posts, sell, or commercially exploit my content without my written permission

  • Reuse my original photography elsewhere without my written permission

  • Download or redistribute Wix stock images from this site

4.4 Content, sources and tools

Transparency matters to me, so here is how the content on this blog is created:

Research and references. A large part of what I write is based on my own deep reading and research — primarily books, but also studies, articles and other published sources. Where my writing draws on a specific book, paper, author or piece of research, I will always include a clear reference or citation.

Writing tools. I use Grammarly to help me check spelling, grammar and sentence structure.

AI assistance. I sometimes use AI tools to help refine sentence structure, phrasing and flow. The ideas, opinions, research and personal experiences shared in my posts are my own — AI is used as a writing aid, not as an author. AI is not used to fabricate sources, generate fake research or replace my own thinking.

4.5 User-generated content (comments)

If you leave a comment, you grant me a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to display, edit and moderate that comment on the site.

You are responsible for what you write. By posting a comment you confirm that the content is your own and does not infringe anyone else's rights, and that it is not defamatory, unlawful, abusive, hateful or spam. I reserve the right to edit, delete or refuse any comment for any reason, without notice.

4.6 Disclaimer of warranties

The site is provided "as is" and "as available". I make no warranties — express or implied — about the operation of the site or the accuracy, completeness or reliability of its content.

4.7 Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by UK law, I will not be liable for any loss or damage (including loss of profit, data or opportunity) arising from your use of, or inability to use, this site or its content. This does not exclude liability for death, personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any liability that cannot be excluded under UK law.

4.8 Changes to the site or these terms

I may change the site or these terms at any time. The latest version will always be posted here, with the "last updated" date refreshed.

4.9 Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

4.10 International visitors

This website is operated from the United Kingdom and is intended primarily for a UK audience. The site is accessible internationally, but I make no representation that the content is appropriate or available for use in other locations. If you choose to access the site from outside the United Kingdom, you do so on your own initiative and are responsible for compliance with any local laws that apply to you. UK law and the courts of England and Wales remain the governing jurisdiction for these terms, regardless of where you access the site from.

4.11 Contact

If you have any questions, please get in touch via the contact form.

By using Independence Paradox you agree to the Privacy Policy, Cookie Policy, Legal Disclaimer and Terms of Use above.
